upstART Gallery is a 1:12 scale miniature space created by Jim Lee.

The fully functional gallery is complete with a skylight, moveable and dimmable track lighting, hardwood flooring, a load-in door, one brick wall – a nod to other distinctly Durham art spaces past and present – and one white wall for displaying art.

upstART Gallery: a Jim Lee project

June 2 - July 1, 2023

About The Exhibit

upstART Gallery will host its first group show at Pop Box Gallery & The Art Chose Me’s residency in Old East Durham. The show features 27 artists who were selected through an open call review process. Artists were challenged to create work especially for this unique space, scaled 1:12 (one inch = one foot).

Jim Lee’s meticulous construction process, chronicled on social media and captured in a series of photographs, is exhibited in conjunction with upstART Gallery. In the text accompanying the photographs, Jim invites us into the deeply personal and political backstory that evolved alongside the project.

upstART Gallery was inspired by the Boston-based Shelter in Place Gallery and is partially funded by The Awesome Foundation.

About Jim Lee

Jim Lee (b. 1940) is a multi-dimensional, self-taught artist whose work is heavily influenced by his love of nature, science, psychology, and technology. Working with cameras, scanners, lighting and collections of found and fabricated objects, Jim creates photographic images that range from the darkly mysterious and figurative to the elegantly simple and abstract. He often ventures outside of his photographic practice into three-dimensional creations. The work can be beautiful, disturbing, or even whimsical. One rarely leaves one of Jim’s pieces without some questions and that is exactly what he wants. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions and can be found in collections at American Tobacco Campus, Andrew Young Enterprises, Cassilhaus, Duke University Medical Center, and in numerous other private venues.

Jim Lee is a Durham, NC native whose favorite childhood activities were building models, exploring nature in nearby woods, and rambling through construction sites. His adult life has seen a variety of careers ranging from linguist to journalist, from farmer to professor, with stints as a community organizer in some of the gaps. Through it all, creativity has been a part of his core.
